An elderly woman and a youth who posed as mother and son have been arrested for allegedly cheating several e-commerce firms of their pricey Apple iPhones. The phones that retail at exorbitant prices were apparently ordered from multiple websites to a rented apartment where the Navi Mumbai Police found about 17 iPhones priced at a total of Rs 8.16 lacs.
As reported by the Times of India, it turns out that the duo would place an order for the iPhone (not just one but three at a time) and then trick the delivery person into believing that they were selling fake iPhones.
The 49-year old who posed as the mother would stand guard at the door and hand over the package to the youth. Heading inside the house the youth would replace the smartphone in the package with a fake one claiming that the company or retailer has sent across a dummy or fake device.
Turns out this not just happened in Navi Mumbai but in Thane, Pune and Ahmedabad as well. It was Snapdeal that found the case a bit fishy, post which the e-commerce firm lodged a complaint with the crime branch.
The Kharghar police have booked the duo for cheating and forgery under IPC sections 420, 465,468, 469, 471 and 34.
