Early this month, Google announced the availability of the Developer Preview of Android N. Among the feature that caught popular interest was freeform mode available within the newly enabled splitscreen multitasking within Android N.
In a recent report by Ars Technica, this could just be the first step towards a more detailed desktop operating system. The report further adds that floating app shows up in the Recent Apps screen.

In order to get your hands on Android N, you would need to sign up for the Android Beta program by heading over to g.co/androidbeta. The report adds that the freeform window feature works on Android N smartphones and tablets. When the feature is enabled, each thumbnail in the Recent Apps gets an additional icon. This includes an X button which appears in a couple of seconds. Along side is a square icon. Once you press the square icon on a specific thumbnail, it will appear as a floating window on the homescreen wallpaper.
This homepage isn’t the Android homepage, but rather a blank wallpaper, the report adds. In addition, there is support for a mouse as well. Hovering over the edges of the apps turns the mouse pointer into a resize symbol.
